Strategy and Authority in Human Design
Strategy and Authority are two key aspects of the Human Design system, serving as tools to support decision-making aligned with our individual energy and life purpose. Here are the details:
Strategy in Human Design
Strategy describes the best way to interact with our environment and other people in order to make correct decisions and avoid resistance. It refers to situations where we engage with others in a way that isn’t beneficial for us, as well as making decisions and taking actions that aren’t aligned with who we are, leading to stress and problems. Strategy is connected to an individual’s Energy Type (Manifestor, Generator, Projector, Reflector). Each type has its own specific strategy.

Strategies with Descriptions:
- Manifestor: The strategy is to inform. Manifestors work best when they inform others of their intentions before taking any action. This eliminates or minimizes resistance from their environment.
- Generator (and Manifesting Generator): The strategy is to respond to external impulses. Generators should wait for external cues (e.g., questions from others, invitations, events) to which they can respond with a “yes” or “no.”
- Projector: The strategy is to wait for an invitation. Projectors work best when invited to take on key roles or tasks, especially in the areas of relationships, career, or collaboration, by those who appreciate the Projector’s values and qualities.
- Reflector: The strategy is to wait for a full lunar cycle (around 28 days). Reflectors need time to understand their feelings and perspective in changing circumstances.
Authority in Human Design
Authority is an internal mechanism that helps us make decisions in alignment with our true nature. It is our “inner wisdom” that allows us to distinguish the right decision from one influenced by internal pressure and/or external influences and conditioning from others. Authority is individual and based on the configuration of our Energy Centers within the body.

Examples of Authorities:
- Sacral Authority: Decisions are made based on responses from the sacral center— a “yes” or “no” feeling in the body.
- Emotional Authority: Decisions should be made after going through an emotional wave (anger, joy, etc.), without rushing, in as calm an emotional state as possible.
- Splenic Authority: Immediate, intuitive feeling of “now”—acting based on instinct and intuition. The intuition at that moment always provides the best solution and response to a given situation.
- Ego (Heart) Authority: Decisions are driven by willpower and desire, focusing on what is best for the person.
- Mental Authority: This applies to Projectors with an open Heart Center. Decisions should be made after conversations with others (mainly by listening to themselves, what and how they speak) and observing the environment (how they feel in that environment).
- Lunar Authority: Found in Reflectors, this requires waiting through a full lunar cycle before making any important decision. During this time, all of their emotions and feelings related to the situation will become clear.
How Strategy and Authority Work Together
Strategy indicates how to approach decision-making in relation to the environment, while Authority helps us internally feel what is correct at any given moment. For example, a Generator with Sacral Authority waits for something they can respond to, and then listens to their internal “yes” or “no.”
In practice, applying Strategy and Authority helps avoid frustration, anger, disappointment, or bitterness—emotions that indicate acting against one’s true self.
