The Type in the Human Design System
Your Type in the Human Design system depends on the individual configuration of Energy Centers in your body and the planetary alignment at the time of your birth. Here are the key elements that determine your Type:
Factors Determining Your Type
Your Type results from which Energy Centers are active (defined) in your Human Design chart and the relationships between them.
Energy Centers
There are 9 Centers in Human Design (similar to chakras in the Eastern system).
The Centers can be:
- Defined (colored) – Represent a constant, independent energy.
- Undefined (white) – Represent areas where you receive energy from the environment and where you are more sensitive.
Channels and Gates (Codes)
Gates (points in the Centers) are connected by lines called Channels to other Gates in different Energy Centers.
The Channels between the Centers determine which Centers are defined, which affects your Type.
Types Based on Energy Centers
Your Energy Type depends on the definition of key centers:
- Manifestor: Has an active (defined) Motor Center (Heart, Emotions (Solar Plexus), or Base, Sacrum) that connects to the Throat Center, but the Sacral Center is undefined. This allows them to initiate actions.
- Generator: Has a defined Sacral Center, which is the source of lasting life energy and the desire to act in response to external stimuli.
- Manifesting Generator: A type of Generator who additionally has a connection between the Sacral Center and the Throat Center (either directly or through other Centers). This gives them traits of fast action and initiation.
- Projector: Does not have a defined Sacral Center and no connection between the Motor Center and the Throat Center. Projectors are open in other Centers, giving them the ability to see and guide the energy of others.
- Reflector: Does not have any defined Centers. All Centers are open, causing them to reflect the energy of their environment and be sensitive to environmental conditions.
Birth Moment and Planetary Data
The Human Design Chart and Profile are based on two key moments:
- The Moment of Birth (personal consciousness): The planetary position at this time determines which Gates are active in your chart.
- Around 88 Days Before Birth (subconscious): The planetary position at this moment influences your unconscious traits.
Planets activate specific Gates (Codes) in the Energy Centers, and when activations in two Gates create a Channel, the Centers that those Gates connect to become defined. It is these definitions that form the basis of your Type.

Your Type results from:
- The activation of Energy Centers through Gates and Channels.
- The relationships between the Centers – whether they are connected to the Throat Center (Manifestor, Manifesting Generator) or have an active Sacral Center (Generator).
- Whether the Centers are open or defined, which determines how you receive and process energy.
Therefore, your Type is a combination of your unique energetic configuration, resulting from the planetary positions and the structure of your chart at birth. Your Type defines who you are.
