Ra Uru Hu and the Emergence of the Human Design System
Ra Uru Hu was the founder, first student, and teacher of Human Design. He was born as Alan (Robert) Krakower in Montreal, Canada, on April 9, 1948, into a wealthy family (his father was an industrialist) and spent his early years there. After earning his degree, his career path led him toward the business world, where he worked in advertising as a magazine publisher and media producer. Art was also an important part of his life, expressed through his work as a composer and performer. He played the guitar. Until leaving Canada, he led quite a “rich life”—wives, divorces, travels, music, substances, and so on. The 1970s were an interesting but also “tumultuous time” for him…
His story related to his later activities began in 1983. He was running a marketing company, making films worldwide… but he felt so tired of his life that he left Canada, went to New York, and bought a one-way ticket to Brussels. He stayed there for a few days, then ended up in Amsterdam. Eventually, at the urging of a young man he met by chance, he took a bus to Spain and arrived in Ibiza, where he worked as a teacher at a school for several years.
This period of his life is described in the book Life and Death of Ra Ben Joseph – Excerpts from the Prequels to Encounter. This small book, just 12 pages of text, is a very personal account of Ra’s journey to Europe, his time in Ibiza before his encounter with the Voice, and the extraordinary and truly mystical experience itself.
The Experience with the “Voice”
In January 1987, an extraordinary, mystical experience took place. During what is known as the “Encounter,” Ra Uru Hu experienced a meeting with the “Voice.” This meeting lasted for eight days and nights, and as a result, Ra received a transmission of information that became the foundation of Human Design. This knowledge covered a wide range of topics, from the nature of life on Earth, our place in the cosmos, our evolution, to the mechanisms of how the human body functions on a genetic and energetic level. Most interestingly, Human Design provides us with a map of our consciousness and subconscious, explains the mechanism of conditioning, and shows how to make the most important life decisions.
Thousands of years of seeking, contemplating, studying, and researching the nature of life on Earth, our place in it, and how we function… We received the most mature apple from the “tree of knowledge.”

I highly recommend the video linked above. It is rare in today’s world for people to speak about truly mystical experiences. We know of such experiences from the Bible, books about mystics, poetry, and prose, but they typically concern very distant times. Here, we have an account from contemporary times. What is more important, the result of this event was not just an inner journey or transformation but the “appearance” of very specific knowledge that connected various systems of self-knowledge. This connection gave rise to Human Design and GeneKeys, a completely new direction of knowledge about humanity, the world, and the evolution of life on Earth.
The Development of Human Design
In 1989, Ra Uru Hu wrote the book Rave I-Ching, the foundation upon which the Human Design system is based. In simple terms, this system is the “key to decoding our genetics.”
In 1991, Ra wrote another book, Human Design System. It is worth quoting here the preface that describes his mystical experience…
“I could never have imagined the incredible turns my life would take when I left Canada in the early 1980s and discovered the island of Ibiza. (…) I was conditioned to believe that ‘science fiction’ was a literary genre, that mystical revelation was just an outdated form of the same thing, and that God, if not dead, was most likely just a concept. On the evening of January 3, 1987, all of that changed. I was ‘penetrated’ by the ‘Voice.’ It was a terrifying experience. My hair literally stood on end, I was in shock, and a stream of water poured down from my head. The Voice asked, ‘Are you ready to work?’ For eight days and nights, I worked, describing in detail how the Human Design system works.” – Ra Uru Hu, 14.10.91, Ibiza.
After this experience, Robert Krakower, now Ra Uru Hu, began sharing the knowledge he had received with others.
Human Design “came to us” as a result of a mystical experience. It became a unique tool that allows us to understand our natural predispositions, talents, challenges, and our psychological and genetic profile.
Ra spent the next 25 years of his life developing and teaching the Human Design System. He lived with his family in the United States, Germany, and for most of the time in Ibiza (Spain), where he passed away in March 2011.
His legacy includes not only the Human Design System but also numerous books (written from his lectures and courses) and recordings that continue to inspire many. Despite his death, his teachings still shape the lives of many who are seeking a deeper understanding of themselves, their role in the grand plan of life, and the phenomenon of life itself.
