Gate 47 (part 2 of 4). “Transmutation – inner Alchemy”

Introduction to Hermetic Transmutation

The process of Transmutation in Hermeticism, based on teachings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus (also known in Egypt as Thoth), is a central element of the Hermetic tradition. It is not merely about the alchemical transformation of metals, such as turning lead into gold, although this metaphor is often used. In fact, transmutation is a mental and spiritual art involving the transformation of mental, emotional, and energetic states.

There is a deeper level of mastery that Hermetic teachings elevate above all others — it is not only about cleansing heaviness, protecting against chaos, or grounding excess energy, but about true freedom that comes when we stop fearing difficult situations, anxieties, stresses, and life’s challenges, and instead learn to use them for our growth. This is transmutation: the ancient art of transforming the “dense” into the subtle, lead into gold, pain into strength. This skill makes us untouchable by control systems because when we learn to transmute even the hardest emotions, we become self-sufficient and no longer rely on external conditions to live and function — the “system” and society then lose their leverage and control over us.

According to The Kybalion, a key Hermetic text, Transmutation means “changing from one nature, form, or substance into another.” It is a process of conscious transformation based on the seven Hermetic principles: Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, and Gender.

Transmutation begins when we understand the fundamental principle: every energy is essentially “neutral.” The energy we label as negative or toxic is not inherently evil — it is simply energy misaligned, misplaced either in form or matter, and no longer serving us. Fear, for example, is energy “twisted” by perception; anger is raw “charge” without proper direction of expression; worry is sensitivity “spinning in circles.” Hermetic masters understood that all these states, once acknowledged and redirected, can fuel clarity, strength, and resilience. But as long as we resist, deny, or try to suppress them, they remain frozen energetic blocks in “our field,” distorting reality and weakening our functioning and manifestation abilities.

In Hermeticism, the universe is mental — “The All is Mind” — therefore, Transmutation begins in the mind. This mechanism operates by influencing vibration, polarity, and rhythm, allowing the transformation of all negative states into positive ones. It is not magic in the supernatural sense, but the application of knowledge, thought, will, and consciousness to change internal reality. This, in turn, creates our external reality. The process is analogous to the alchemical “Great Work” (Magnum Opus), where the transformation of matter symbolizes the transformation of the soul.

Beneath every technique, practice, and layer of Hermetic wisdom lies one undeniable law — the Law of Vibration: everything vibrates, nothing rests; every object, thought, emotion, and intention carries its own frequency, oscillating through the “fabric of reality,” and that frequency determines the shape of our experience. Hermetic masters understood that the quality of our life is not determined by circumstances but by resonance — we do not attract what we want but what we are, the vibration and frequency we emit.

Energy of Thought and Inner Sovereignty

Hermetic teachings emphasize that thoughts are not mere random electrical impulses but vibrations — and every vibration is energy moving and resonating within the field of reality. Our internal narrative sends out waves shaping the opportunities, encounters, and challenges we meet. By changing our internal frequency, we inevitably influence the external world. However, most people unknowingly sabotage this process by trying to force change through empty affirmations, ignoring hidden emotional charges. The field responds not to words but to a coherent emotional frequency. Mastery of the mind therefore requires emotional discipline, because emotions amplify the power of thought, making it stronger than any verbal declaration. The mind can be compared to a tuning fork — pure, calm, and focused it resonates steadily, while cluttered with conflicting thoughts and unexpressed emotions it generates chaotic signals. Understanding that our mind acts like a transmitter, extending beyond the boundaries of the body, leads to inner sovereignty. Then we stop chasing approval, blaming circumstances, or waiting for a better world — we focus on the only true control panel: our internal state. And when it changes, reality must follow.

The Body as Vessel and Temple

In the Hermetic tradition, the process of Transmutation always begins with the body—not as a mechanical tool, but as a temple, and even before that, as a mirror. A mirror of the cosmos, the soul, and the laws, in which “that which is above is like that which is below, and that which is below is like that which is above, to accomplish the miracles of the One.”

In this view, the body is a living laboratory where the Great Work can unfold. The heart becomes the inner sun, the liver—the warrior Mars, and the kidneys—the balance of Libra. Every breath is an invocation of spirit, every gesture—an anchoring of will into matter. Alchemy teaches that transformation requires a vessel: pure and sealed, capable of holding the fire. This vessel is ourselves—our blood, carrying memories and visions; our breath, the fire heating the inner cauldron; our sleep, where dissolution takes place. Everything is ritual: eating becomes feeding a god; movement opens subtle channels; rest is an offering to the Spirit dwelling in the body.

“The body is the laboratory of the spirit, and the blood its mercury,” reminds Paracelsus, one of the great masters of medieval alchemy.

In this laboratory, the elements intertwine in the silence of consciousness: earth in the bones, water in the blood, fire in the life impulse, air in the breath, ether in the hidden unity. Transmutation begins with slowing down and becoming still, with attentive breathing, with purifying the inner space. For when energy begins to circulate, the unprepared body—breaks. That is why anyone who seeks to experience transmutation does not separate spirituality from the body; they know there is no transcendence without conscious incarnation. It is in our body, our “vessel,” this portable sanctuary, that after purification we may finally experience the true Gifts—Siddhi—the “wine of the gods.”

Our Mind and Will

Transmutation in the dimension of the mind and will is a process in which the mental mirror becomes a “crystal of pure reflection,” and our thoughts and visualizations become the “mental sword”—a tool for precisely cutting through illusions and conditioning. The mind, being the “altar in the temple of the body,” can be a place of consecration or of desecration, depending on what we place upon it. It can become our prison, or it can serve as a tool of spiritual development.

“All is Mind, the Universe is mental,” reminds the Hermetic Law of Mentalism, and thus every fragment of our reality reflects the structure of our thinking—both our conscious and unconscious beliefs. Transmutation requires cleansing this space of noise, inherited convictions, undigested memories, and fears of the future, until it becomes a clear field of creation.

In this process, the mind is both mirror and sword: it reflects truth while separating what is authentic from what is illusory. Yet, the cleansing of the mind alone is not enough—there must be the fire of will. In Hermetic and alchemical understanding, will is not desire but a pure flame, the meeting point of microcosm and macrocosm.

“You shall not attain the Most High while your will is divided,” we read in the Corpus Hermeticum.

Cleansing the mind is an act of burning illusions, ego, and “low-vibrational” emotions (fears, regrets, painful memories, betrayals, losses, etc.) in the alchemical fire, until our mind becomes one with the Will of the All. Then every new experience—pain, failure, lesson, or ecstasy—becomes raw material for the “Great Work of Life” and the pure experience of the phenomenon of being alive.

Thought, feeling, word, and action move in the same direction, and life ceases to be a collection of accidents—it becomes a continuous transmutation: lead into gold, spark into sun. True will does not conquer—it serves, expressing itself in the unity of being. In this state, we do not flee from the world; we consecrate it, knowing that Spirit fully reveals itself only in complete living—in experiencing all that life brings, in fulfilling our dreams, and in living “with a full breath” and an “open heart.”

Stages of the Transmutation Process

Hermetic Transmutation is not rigidly divided into stages like classical alchemy, but key phases can be identified based on the principles of The Kybalion and alchemical tradition.

In The Kybalion, the process is described as mental alchemy, focusing on changing vibration and polarity. In the broader Hermetic context, four main stages symbolize spiritual evolution. Below we describe them step-by-step, combining mental and alchemical perspectives, enriched with practical elements of emotional and energetic transmutation.

  1. Recognition and Decomposition (“Nigredo” – Blackening):
The first stage is the identification and deconstruction of existing emotional and physical states. In Hermetic alchemy, “Blackening” is the state where matter (or the soul) decomposes, revealing hidden impurities. Mentally, this means acknowledging negative vibrations such as fear, hatred, disbelief, or chaos. The first step in Transmutation is observing these emotions without judgment: when a heavy emotion arises, we pause instead of reacting — observing where it “resides” in our body; is it pressure in the chest, a knot in the stomach, or tension behind the eyes? Bringing conscious attention to its location transforms the overwhelming feeling into something defined, something processable. When we locate this emotion, we can begin to observe it. According to the Law of Vibration (“Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates”), we start by analyzing our own thoughts and emotions as vibrations.
Mechanism: We use will to lower the vibration to “break down” old patterns. Kybalion states: “Every thought, emotion, mental state has a corresponding frequency and type of vibration.” The effect of this phase is purification, preparing for change.
  2. Cleansing and Polarization (“Albedo” – Whitening):
After identifying and naming, cleansing occurs. In alchemy, this is “whitening,” where impurities are removed, achieving purity. Hermetically, it relies on the Law of Polarity (“Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites”). This stage involves changing polarity — shifting the mind from a negative pole (e.g., fear) to a positive one — courage, worry to vigilance.
Burning Mechanism: Focusing attention on the desired pole neutralizes unwanted vibrations. The Kybalion advises: “To destroy an undesired mental vibration frequency, use the Law of Polarity and concentrate on the opposite pole.” This is a stage of introspection, meditation, and conscious choice where emotions become a tool of transformation.

We additionally introduce the observed emotion into the “inner furnace” — the solar plexus, the seat of personal will, power, and transformation. We visualize a steady golden flame burning in this center, ready to receive any “dense energy.”

With each inhale, we gather the heavy feeling; with each exhale, we watch it flow into the flame — not forcibly, not violently, but intentionally. The flame absorbs and refines it, transforming tension into fuel.

Use of Color: Color becomes a tool: the vibrational frequency of colors carries specific energetic signatures — violet, always used in mystical traditions, resonates with Transmutation; visualizing oneself surrounded by violet light during the process amplifies intention. The violet field penetrates deeply, breaking stubborn densities and reorganizing them into higher vibrations. When exhaustion or difficult emotions arise, we shift to golden or white colors and frequencies that restore vitality and mental illumination.

These processes are not “mental games” — they are energetic commands recognized by our energetic field and mirrored in the response of our nervous system.

Sound: Sound also becomes our ally: a low, steady “hum” or prolonged vibration of “OM” resonates through the body, “shaking” low-vibrating energy and reorganizing our field. We don’t need to sing; simply allow the sound to flow through us with steady breathing and focused attention; vibrations act directly on our energetic anatomy, loosening knots of low frequency that thoughts and words alone cannot reach.

  1. Neutralization and Awakening (“Citrinitas” – Yellowing):
The third stage is neutralizing rhythm and achieving higher understanding. In alchemy, this is “Yellowing,” symbolizing awakening and integration. It relies on the Law of Rhythm (“Everything flows in and out; everything has its tides and ebbs”).
Mechanism: Raising consciousness to a higher plane to avoid the pendulum of moods — the master “polarizes himself to a certain pole and by a process similar to ‘refusing’ to participate in the pendulum’s return motion, he permanently stands in his polarized position.” Here we combine intention with will, using the Law of Cause and Effect to become the “cause of changes,” not their “effect.” This means we create our reality rather than being subjected to what others create.

Effect: Mental stability and spiritual awakening. The more we practice Transmutation, the faster our healing (return to a desired state) after emotional “triggers” — what once plunged us into spirals of fear, stress, or frustration for days or weeks now dissipates quickly, because we no longer fight emotions but metabolize them, extracting their charge and creating “useful fuel” for our growth.

4. Union and Realization (Rubedo – Reddening):
The final stage is the union of opposites and complete Transmutation. In alchemy, this is the “reddening,” where the “philosopher’s stone” is achieved — perfect unity. Hermetically, it is based on the Law of Gender (“Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principles”).
Mechanism: The integration of masculine (active) and feminine (receptive) energies, leading to the creation of a new reality. The Kybalion emphasizes: “Mastery does not consist in extraordinary dreams, visions… but in using higher forces against lower ones.” This is the phase where Transmutation becomes a continuous process, influencing the environment.

In the background, the Law of Vibration operates: we do not attract what we want, but what we are — this truth is both liberating and confronting, because it means no external force has ultimate power over our reality, but also that we are always participants in what unfolds, consciously or not. Every recurring pattern in our life — whether struggles with finances, toxic relationships, or cycles of stagnation or withdrawal — is not simply bad luck or external injustice; it is our resonance. The “field” responds to the signal we maintain inside ourselves, not to fleeting desperate wishes, nor occasional positive thoughts in frustration, but to the consistent, dominant frequency in which we live every day.

In the Kybalion, the stages are not numbered, but the process is dynamic: it begins with a change in vibration, passes through polarization, neutralization, and culminates in mastery on higher planes.

Effects of Transmutation for Us

The effect of the transmutation process is achieving mastery over oneself and one’s surrounding reality. On an individual level, this means control over emotions, moods, and circumstances.

“To change your mood or mental state — change your vibration.” We become “masters, not slaves” of our mental states, which leads to inner peace, mental and physical health (through influence on the energy field and body vibrations). That is why Alchemy and Transmutation were so protected and hidden by those who controlled society and “the system.” When we know how to transform fear into focus or pain into drive, we become resistant to external control and manipulation. We no longer need external calm or perfect conditions to thrive. We generate stability from within.

As long as we resist our own Shadows, they control us — but the moment we fully face them, we break their “grip.” Transmutation does not mean we will never feel pain, anger, or fear again — it means we stop being controlled by them. We become alchemists, accepting what comes not as a threat, but as raw material for “refinement.”

The Hermetic path does not promise a life free of challenges — it offers something much greater: the ability to function in any circumstance, transforming whatever life brings into strength. This is true power: quiet, steady, unshakable… and always waiting inside us to be utilized.

Effects of Transmutation on a Spiritual Level

On a spiritual level: Enlightenment, connection with the universal Mind (ALL), allowing manifestation of changes in the outer world. Masters can influence others through mental induction, heal or alter environments. The Kybalion states: “He who understands the law of vibration has gained the scepter of power.” The ultimate effect is soul evolution — a return to the source, with expanded consciousness, symbolized by the alchemical “gold” — the perfect, indestructible essence. In a broader context, Transmutation frees us from the illusion of duality, making us active creators of life, aligned with higher laws.

Transmutation does not end with a single cycle but becomes a continuous practice leading to sovereignty and harmony with the cosmos. What happens when enough people make this shift? The entire system begins to “crumble” — not by violence, rebellion, or revolution, but through internal change.

Society and the Concealment of Transmutation Knowledge

Transmutation — the true alchemy of the spirit — is the greatest threat to the pillars of modern civilization based on control, consumption, and external authorities. Its essence is that we learn to consciously transform energy — fear into courage, anger into clarity of action, despair into tenderness and compassion. It is a process that cannot be sold in a pill or written on a prescription. It requires no subscription, special gadgets, or addictive services — only conscious presence, inner discipline, and courage to look straight at what is most difficult within us.

This is why systems of power, education, and economy have for centuries kept this knowledge on the margins or packaged it in ways that render it ineffective. If humanity widely understood that it can independently transmute its pain into power, the pharmaceutical industry would collapse at its foundations. Billions spent on psychotropics, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, and “mood stabilizers” would become unnecessary. Not because we would stop experiencing difficult emotions, but because we would know how to transform them before they destroy our body and mind.

Along with this would fall a large part of the psychological and personal development services sector — which, though often well-intentioned, in many cases functions on a model that creates client dependency on continuous therapy or coaching sessions. When a person learns to independently transform their states, they no longer need years-long processes based on past analysis — they can change their energy in real time.

But this is just the beginning of a chain of consequences. The beauty, fashion, and aesthetic treatment industry — a gigantic machine generating artificial needs — would lose its power if people felt sufficient and beautiful in their natural form. Inner sovereignty removes the need to compensate for lack of acceptance through constant image enhancement.

Equally painful for the system would be the disappearance of billions in profits from alcohol, cigarettes, sweets, and other substances that numb body and soul. The consumption mechanism is based on escaping oneself, while Transmutation leads straight inward. Conscious processing of emotional energy removes the hunger for numbing substances, as we no longer need to cut off what we feel.

Thus, knowledge of Transmutation is like a key to escape the labyrinth in which whole societies have been kept for generations. It is knowledge that shatters the illusion of dependence on external sources of safety and happiness. In a system that thrives on our helplessness, energetic self-sufficiency is an act of rebellion. When the individual regains inner power, structures based on control lose their reason to exist — because you cannot govern someone who needs nothing but their own source of life.
